Inferring: The Heartbeat of Comprehension

Comprehending beyond the literal level of texts is important. And inferring is a big part of being able to comprehend deeply. But how do we teach students about inferring?  Participants will first learn how inferring fits into the complex reading processing system and then become better acquainted with the concept of inferring as they reflect on themselves as readers. Throughout the webcast they will begin to see inferring opportunities in all levels of texts as they learn to teach students to dig deeper into the articles, stories, and books they read.

The presenters will share how they teach students to naturally infer as they read. They will share modeled lessons, shared demonstrations, and suggestions for guided practice with a variety of fiction picture books, non-fiction texts, and poetry. Viewers will walk away with a wealth of ideas for getting students to infer in a multitude of ways. Though inferring opportunities can be found in almost every type of text, teachers will receive a list of picture books that fit with the topic.

Viewing Information

  • This webcast is available on-demand only - it is not a live presentation. It is best viewed by an individual or a small group.

  • RRCNA webcasts require a computer with a high speed (broadband) connection, such as DSL, cable, or a T1. Dial-up connections do not have enough bandwidth to reliably send streaming video.

  • After you purchase the webcast, an instruction page will open on your screen. This page includes a link to the actual webcast. You can view the webcast immediately by clicking on the link; however, you will be instructed to save the link first. As long as you copy and save the link, or save the webpage as a favorite, you can return to the webcast and view it again. You will also receive a confirmation email that contains the link.

  • Occasionally a webcast will hesitate or stop while playing. Webcasts are pre-recorded and are sent to you as streaming video. Usually if a video stops in the middle, it is because more information is downloading. This can occur when your Internet connection or network is running more slowly than usual. The video should begin again shortly.

  • If the webcast will be presented for training purposes, we highly recommend that you test it first by playing the entire video to make sure it runs properly on your computer. Please communicate with your IT department to confirm that you do not have any firewalls in place that might block streaming media.

  • The webcast will play as an Adobe Flash video, so you can pause at anytime while it is playing. You may then click on play to continue, at your convenience. However, if you close the webpage while playing, you will have to start from the beginning the next time you view the video. You cannot fast forward during the video, because the video is streaming to your computer as it plays. You may wish to download the latest Flash Player at www.Adobe.com.
